Why I Love the Golden Girls
I was too young for The Golden Girls when it first came on, but after seeing the reruns on Lifetime in high school, I became a fan. The sitcom about four mature women living in Miami was a brilliant show, but as Betty White once said, this show couldn’t get on the air today. Would a network now have a show with women over 40 who aren’ t Botoxed and have active social lives? Well, there’s Sex and the City, but as Marge Simpson said, ” They’re four women who act like gay men”. The Golden Girls were real women who cared about each other, had hot flashes, and never were dependent on men.
I also loved the fact that they talked about sex-but not explicitly. It was probably the times, but also good writing. I love double entendres and sly jokes that make me ask ” Are they talking about what I think they’re talking about?” Give me that over Two and Half Men’s too-graphic descriptions of body parts any day. Grab a slice of cheesecake, watch the reruns, and hear a too-long story about St. Olaf. Estelle Getty, RIP.
